Hotel Du Vin
While nominally a ‘chain’, each Hotel du Vin is unique enough to maintain the feel of an independent boutique. Its Bristol branch is particularly spectacular, occupying a set of sugar warehouses from the 1700s. There’s a whiff of the golden age of British industry in the timber-heavy design and vast chimney that dominates the reception. The hotel is close to the trendy waterfront area, but you could quite easily just stay on the premises all weekend; there’s a ‘cigar shed’ in the gardens, the on-site bistro specialises in English classics and a heavyweight wine list. The rooms boast king-sized beds, Egyptian linen sheets and possibly the best bathrooms you’ll ever use. Free-standing tubs are complemented by walk-through ‘monsoon’ showers, meaning that you’ll probably spend the bulk of the weekend splashing around in between bouts of room service, before returning home soft, a bit wrinkly and incredibly well-fed.
