Shane Warne makes an appalling advert

When? England’s 1991 winter Ashes Tour in Australia was an unhappy one. David Gower was no longer captain because he kept leaving press conferences to go and see musicals, and Graham Gooch had taken his place, installing a strict and unpopular regime on the players.

Where? Between the third and fourth Tests, England played Queensland. But Gower had already thwacked two centuries in the series, so got out cheaply against the club side. Because he couldn’t be arsed.

What happened? Gower and his teammate John Morris didn’t fancy watching England bat, so they hired a Tiger Moth plane and a pilot from a nearby airfield and buzzed the game while Robin Smith and Allan Lamb were batting. Gower was fined £1000 and banned for the following summer’s Tests against the West Indies. It could have been worse, if the two pranksters had remembered to chuck the bag of water bombs they had with them.
