When? 1989: On the plane from Sydney to London, prior to the Australian’s victorious Ashes tour, which saw them regain the trophy after five years of English dominance.

Where? The exact location is harder to pin down, but reason suggests that ‘Boony’ broke the previous record (44 cans, set by Rod Marsh) during the latter stages of the 10,600-mile flight, after the plane had an opportunity to refuel. And stock up on tinnies.

What happened? Well, 54 cans of beer is 19.5 litres. Or: 34 pints. That’s enough to kill a small pig. Or even quite a big pig. But Boony didn’t die. Instead, Australia won the Ashes back, and due to the nature of the modern game, it’s likely that his record’s forever safe. But never underestimate the Aussies.
