IS IT TRUE THAT EURO 2012 CAN KILL YOU?

Sadly it is. Even though we’re all calling it ‘The Tournament Of Life’ (well, aren’t we?), for a football-crazed young Chinese man, it has proven to be his ultimate undoing.

26-year-old Jiang Xiaoshan has tragically perished after going 11 straight nights without sleep in order to watch every single match in the tournament – even though each one only lasts for a couple of hours.

Xiaoshan died from chronic exhaustion coupled with overconsumption of booze and fags after working every day and staying up all night in China, where matches are being shown live in the middle of the night. Oh dear.

RIP JIANG XIAOSHAN. ANYWAY, NEVER MIND HIM, WHAT NEWS OF TEAM ENGLAND?

Roy’s boys are gearing up nicely for the quarter final against Italy tomorrow night, with Hodgson boldly claiming that England have a 50/50 chance of making it through to the semis, and poo-pooing the idea that we might be easy pickings for the Italians. Yes, poo-pooing.

Hodgson said: “We're not underdogs in any way. We have good-quality players who are recognised worldwide and, certainly, would get into a lot of the top European teams.” Erm... okay Mr. Motivator, whatever...

HOW ARE THE TWO TEAMS PREPARING?

While England are no doubt poring over dossiers of info about the Italians while discussing endless tactical possibilities, the Italians themselves are immersing themselves in bongo films.

Or at least that’s what their keepers Gianluigi Buffon and Morgan De Sanctis hinted at last night. Some porn (of whatever quality) has to be infinitely preferable to thinking about the sight of Andy Carroll or Wayne Rooney bearing down on you with their tongues hanging out.

WHAT OF TONIGHT’S MATCH?

We’ve got the third quarter final, between France and Spain, and after this there will be just FOUR MORE MATCHES left in Euro 2012. Noooo!!!!

Tonight’s game could go either way – neither side have truly lived up to their potential and they’ll both need to step up a gear if they want to be considered as contenders to win the big pot next weekend. Let's hope we get an individual performance like this one from Zidane in the same fixture in Euro 2000.

We’ve got a hankering for an upset, and 4/1 for France to win in 90 minutes looks like an appealing bet. Mind you, a Spain win in 90 minutes with an Iniesta goal included is an even better value 5/1 bet.

ANY OTHER NEWS?

Oh yeah, Germany hammered Greece last night.
