FHM (and Ian Woosnam) take on America at golf

Introduction

At 3.23pm on Monday the 4th of October 2010, FHM was sitting in this very office, nervously watching the small flat screen television above us, praying that a Northern Irishman would beat an American and, in turn, ensure Europe beat America.

Almost exactly seven months later, FHM was standing on the first tee at the very same Celtic Manor course on which Graham McDowell secured the Ryder Cup, praying that our first tee shot wouldn’t shank straight into the intimidating steward watching on officiously.

A few weeks earlier, you see, we’d been invited to represent Europe in the annual ‘Writer Cup’ – a puntastic contest between journalists from the States and Europe. Ever competitive, we accepted the invitation and quickly set about making preparations...

Well, our version of ‘preparations’, at least.

Sure, we could have practised. We could have watched instructional videos. We could have read problem-solving guides. We could have had golf lessons. We could have cleaned our clubs, even.

But we didn’t.

Instead, we asked Ian Woosnam, a former US Masters champion who’s been involved in an astonishing 10 Ryder Cups (eight playing, one as Vice Captain and one as Captain) for some advice on how to beat those pesky Americans.
