WOW! WHAT ABOUT THAT OPENING CEREMONY!
Eh? Are you sure? From where we were sitting it was all fairly mundane stuff. A hill, some huge chimneys, an open-air hospital, the Queen jumping out of a helicopter, Mr Bean, a lesbian kiss, the Arctic Monkeys and David Beckham on a speedboat. Total lack of imagination. Wish we’d watched Vera on ITV instead now.
Also, did we spot our first Nazi of the games...?
DID NONE OF IT IMPRESS YOU?
The best bit was the imposter who led out Team India. Dressed in jeans and a red top (with the rest of them in yellow turbans and saris), she led the team out while full of smiles and waves. No one knows who she is or how she got on to the track. She’s probably collected a fat bunch of notes in wager winnings today though.
Additionally, we need to find out whose nan it was that got on stage and pretended to be Sir Paul McCartney towards the end of the show…
HAVE WE BAGGED A GOLD YET?
Sadly not. The most strongly-fancied GB cycling team of all time ended up coming nowhere, possibly paggered from all that Tour de Francing they’ve been doing over the past month.
The leading pack managed to conjure up a crash towards the end but our boys still couldn’t bridge the gap that had opened up. In truth, the most unexpected event was the presence of an excited dog in the middle of the road in Twickenham.
We’re expecting more in the time trial – if we don’t get it there’ll be mass bike burnings all across the UK.
If that wasn’t bad enough, Team GB have also crashed out in the men’s archery. Robin Hood and William Tell will be spinning in their graves. What? William Tell was Swiss? Oh… whatever…
WHAT’S COMING UP ON SUNDAY?
In the men’s football, Team GB are up against the cash-rich, oil-soaked United Arab Emirates, with a win a necessity following the shoddy draw against Senegal.
Elsewhere there’ll be tennis, hockey, more beach volleyball and some swimming finals. We’re predicting that we’ll start getting impatient and pining for the track and field sometime on Monday afternoon…
