Introduction
Spurious claim alert: comedians are the new rock stars. Justification of spurious claim: in the absence of anyone in a post-messed-up-Pete-Doherty music business behaving at all badly, it’s been left to men who make us laugh to do the necessary drinking, drug taking and womanising. Comedy is where the party’s at. Tours are longer, shows are bigger, performers are everywhere.
But comedy, especially stand-up comedy, is more than just a modern day excuse to be a miscreant. It’s an art form. The idea of which scares most people into doing a little fear wee in their pants and saying things like: “You? Alone? On stage? Trying to be funny? In front of all those people?” Those people would not be good at comedy.
They, like us, are admirers of comedy. In awe of men and women brave enough to try and prove to an audience that they know their way round a gag. Here’s a little rundown of some people who are well on their way to mastering the art…
