When? 2005: England won the Ashes for the first time in 18 years. Freddie Flintoff smashed Ian Botham’s record of six sixes in an Ashes test match (Flintoff got nine, AND took seven wickets in the same game), scored a century at Trent Bridge and took five wickets on the fourth day of the final Test. The whole country got very drunk. Flintoff was great at that, too.

Where? While cricket fans gushed with genuine disbelief, England’s heroes went on an epic (and deserved) bender, were paraded around London on a double-decker, tossed MBEs like penny sweets and called for a drinks reception at 10 Downing Street.

What happened? Well, who to ask? The rumour goes that none of England’s cricketers remember sloshing champagne in the garden of Number 10. Kevin Pietersen admitted “not even remembering shaking the Prime Minister’s hand”. But Flintoff has distanced himself from such controversy, calling it “an urban myth”.
