Best for almost everything:

Apple iPhone 3.5G

Why’s it good?
It’s still beautiful, still has the best touch screen and music player, not forgetting idiot-proof e-mail and browsing. But…it’s also still got a dodgy camera, can’t send MMS, can’t edit docs, has a naff battery, fiddly keypad and no Flash support. But… the 3.5G is lightning quick, Google Map A-GPS solid, you can download tunes anywhere and the App Store is unbeatable. But…Christ, we’re dizzy. Not perfect, but still the best you’ll get.

Gimme: 8GB iPhone from free-£99 and 16GB from free-£150, depending on contract with 02; apple.com

Best for watching telly:

Nokia N96

Why’s it good?
Fat-fingered N95 fans rejoice: it’s a classic dual-slider with proper buttons. It’s a shame that it feels a bit dated held up against the rest – even with a 2.8in screen, HSDPA, quadband and wi-fi, a 5MP camera and a hefty 16GB and microSD slot storage. GPS is slick, N-Gage fun and the BBC iPlayer neat, but the OS gets bogged down and the battery life sucks worse than the iPhone.

Best for iPhone haters:

BlackBerry Storm

Why’s it good?
The fun of an iPhone with the brains of a BlackBerry – the clickable touchscreen will take some getting used but, trust us, when you do, you’ll discover the best keypad since proper buttons. The 3.25in screen’s ace, the 3.2MP digital camera trumps the iPhone and it’s packed with more BlackBerry goodness than Ribena. Unbeatable push e-mail support, A-GPS, 3G, cut-and-paste and full office apps – they’re all here. Sure, it’s tubby, you can grow a beard while waiting for a net page to load and there’s no wi-fi but, even so, Apple has a rival.

Gimme: free subject to £35 Vodafone contract; vodafone.com

Best for videos:

HTC Touch HD

Why’s it good?
It isn’t actually high-def, but with 3.8in of 480×800 crispness it’s the best phone screen we’ve ever seen. Luckily it comes with an 8GB microSD card, as the 512MB onboard is embarrassing. The 5MP camera does the job; it’s connected to the max and feels fantastic. The big screen is great for fat hands and not as sluggish as some HTC handsets, but even the excellent TouchFLO 3D interface can’t hide the hate-inducing Windows 6.1 OS.

Best for fanboys:

T-Mobile G1

Why’s it good?
Sure it looks about as appealing as a prostate examination, but, get past that cover and, as with the proctologist, plenty of you will love this. The main object of geek-drool will be Google’s unbelievably slick open source Android OS, but it also features an iPhone-smooth touchscreen, top-quality net surfing, untouchable GPS and a full QWERTY pad. Shame apps aren’t up to much (yet), the camera’s abysmal and there’s no headphone socket. Fanboys tuck in; FHM’s waiting for the G2.

Best for nerds:

HP iPaq Data Messenger

Why’s it good?
It’s another attempt to wear a tie but still hang out with the kids behind the bike shed. Like the G1, there’s a slide-out keyboard, 2.8in touchscreen and Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional for document editing, and ‘push’ e-mail (if your IT department lets you). Plus, the usual: 3.1MP camera (poor), GPS, wi-fi, Bluetooth and 3.5G high-speed HSDPA data. But it’s too bulky and, until HP sorts out the user-interface, too geeky.

Best for pictures:

Samsung i850

Why’s it good?
Samsung’s chucked everything at this N95 clone. The 8MP camera is as good as most sub-£150 standalone snappers (face detection, twin LED flash, auto focus), plus, there’s 8GB expandable memory, wi-fi, 3G, A-GPS, the media player handles DivX, WMV, Real Player and Mpeg4 video and there’s even FIFA 08 thrown in. Cons: it’s brick-like, the mouse tracker and menu layout suck and battery life is crap.
