William Richard Green’s biography informs us that was born in 1985. If we’ve calculated it correctly, this makes him 26, or 27 at most. Which is a pretty startling discovery, seeing as we’ve just been scanning his A/W 2011 lookbook and it’s very accomplished indeed. Green is Worcestershire-born and currently London-based, having come down to the capital to attend the prestigious Central Saint Martins. His graduate collection caused a lot of hype, and he has since gone on to to design his own, eponymous label.
For A/W 11, Green contrasts polka dots, stripes and checks with minimal black tailoring to create a contemporary, but not clinical-feeling collection. Apparently Green was inspired by Vikings, and there’s certainly a utilitarian sparseness to the designs. A few of the pieces are pretty ‘out there’ (red plaid drop crotch trousers, anyone?) but the clean lines and inventive use of pattern indicate an accomplished start to a promising career. Keep an eye on this one.
