The FHM guide to conversation starters

Comments beat compliments

Comments beat compliments

Learn the difference between a comment and compliment. You might think it makes you sound suave and winning, but compliments make women feel uncomfortable. Full stop. Yes, the girl will be flattered, but she will also know straight away that you want to get in her pants - because all women know that a man is not admiring her shoes/necklace/perfume because he’s thinking about buying one for his mum.

Equally, if you say something about her face or body, it just looks like you’ve been sat there perving over her from a distance, which is creepy and a little bit unnerving. Any compliment, no matter how unusual, genuine or ingenious, always translates to ‘You = fit, me = horny’. Like we said, she knows you fancy her, otherwise you wouldn’t be talking to her.

Comments, on the other hand, are a very different beast and can be useful openers. And by comments, we mean straightforward statements such as, "Those are very high heels, how the hell do you walk in them?" Not "Wow, what lovely peep-toe platforms, they really show off your elegant feet". You see, complicated beings that they are, girls do like to be noticed but they don’t like to be fawned over (until later, anyway, when they become your girlfriend and you have to compliment them ALL THE TIME).

In fact, this is a good opportunity for you to inject a bit of humour into the proceedings and get a bit of playful teasing going. So, basically, feel free to use an arresting aspect of her appearance to start a conversation but make sure you’re not being too nice. Weird, we know.
