Though a fraction of the price of the real thing, an imitation alarm box stands out like a sore thumb to any experienced pilferer. But if you must get one, have it installed high up on your front wall, as this is where most genuine boxes are fitted.

Michael says: "They’re pointless. Real alarms are serviced every three months. And when they service it, they always clean the alarm box. If yours is dirty, I know it’s false. And it probably has something on it like ‘Bloggs & Son’, which is never a good idea. You might as well put the keys up there instead."
