Stop me if you've heard this before—an adult teacher is in trouble after making a really poor decision by having sex with a student. Oh, that's right, it happens a few times nearly every week. And this one involving a 34-year-old music teacher named Briana Travis of Illinois is pretty wild.
According to reports, Travis was sentenced to 14 years in prison after she plead guilty to having a months-long sexual relationship with a 13-year-old student, per Chicago Tribune.
Travis, who was a music teacher at Daniel Webster Middle School in Waukegan, had been charged with 13 counts of criminal sexual assault involving a victim between the ages of 13 and 17 and one count of aggravated criminal sexual abuse. She was accused of having sex with the minor multiple times between June 1 and Oct. 15 of last year.
According to Waukegan police, the investigation of Travis began when a concerned parent contacted the Police Department about inappropriate texting between a student and the music teacher. Travis was charged "after she began to reveal details" about an inappropriate relationship with a minor, who was not the student whose parent initiated the texting complaint, authorities said.
The former teacher must serve at least 85 percent of the 14-year sentence before even being considered for parole, and will be a registered sex offender when she is finally released, so, yeah, not the smartest decision in the world to do something this disgusting.
