When The Fast And The Furious was released in 2001, there was no one involved with the production, or who sat in theaters around the world watching it, who could have possibly imagined that sixteen years later we’d be on the eighth film in a franchise that has grossed nearly $4 billion. And far from being a victim of diminishing returns, Fast & Furious 6 pulled in $789 million, while Furious 7 grossed $1.5 billion (which is Avengers kind of money). The plot of the new one….almost doesn’t matter. In a nutshell, Charlize Theron is villainess Cipher, who somehow manages to corrupt Dom (Vin Diesel), resulting in Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) having to pull the old team back together again, with some new additions (including Jason Statham’s Shaw). That’s all just the MacGuffin for some of the most incredible stuntwork involving vehicles and humans that we’ve ever seen and what the audience is really paying for. Remember the days when only James Bond featured this sort of thing? Sorry, 007, the competition is here to stay.
