The horror genre never truly goes out of vogue. There may be ebbs and flows, but its presence is steadfast. And while it may work on television, it’s never the same as being in a crowded theater, responding in unison to things that either go bump in or jump out of the dark.
Already this year we’ve dealt with vampires (Underworld: Blood Wars), the source of evil (The Bye Bye Man), a kidnapper with 23 distinct personalities (Split), blood-thirsty mutants (Resident Evil: The Final Chapter), yet another cursed video tapes (Rings—when are they going to upgrade to Blu-ray, or, better still, streaming? Think of the damage you could do with this premise if you spread evil through streaming!), fungal diseases culminating in victims transforming into zombies (The Girl With All The Gifts), survival of the fittest in an office building (The Belko Experiment), an extraterrestrial critter on the loose in a space station (Life), and demonic possession (The Blackcoat’s Daughter). And all of that was only the first half of the year.
What follows is FHM’s look ahead to what’s still to come—and these will scare the sh*t out of you, so be prepared to lose some sleep after seeing them.
