The 11 Most-Hyped Sci-Fi Films Still To Come In 2017

There once was a time when sci-fi was considered a four-letter word in Hollywood, and fantasy wasn’t far behind it.

Well, things have changed quite a bit, haven't they?

Outside of the genre boom of the 1950s—usually created as analogies for fear of nuclear destruction during the Cold War—for many years, sci-fi was a hard sell, until everyone jumped on the intergalactic bandwagon once Star Wars was released in 1977. That changed everything and, suddenly, studios couldn’t get into space fast enough. Naturally, the audience didn’t waste any time letting the corporate types know that it was more than happy to go along for the ride.

Bottom line: the sci-fi and fantasy genres have the ability to transport audiences through time, to other planets, into alternate dimensions or can simply open their minds to myriad possibilities of existence. Here we are forty years after Star Wars and those genres are bigger than ever. Throughout the rest of this year, there are, of course, quite a number of sequels (bringing us everything from talking monkeys, replicants, Jedi and—most exciting of all—Baby Groot), but some intriguing original conceptions as well (which, naturally, will spawn sequels of their own in the years to come).
