Professional boxer Canelo Alvarez is, with all intents and purposes, the great hope in a dying sport. At 27 years old, he's the one who carries the torch in trying to resurrect boxing, reminding everyone that boxing was once a prized sport.
While the Mexican Alvarez tries to filed the pressure of making boxing relevant again, he's also in the midst of training for his upcoming bout with WBA, WBC, IBF, and IBO middleweight champion, Gennady Golovkin, who he's set to fight on September 16th.
Taking some time to sit down with GQ magazine, Alvarez shared what his daily diet looks like—and, wow, does it ever look bare.
Egg whites with ham and orange juice
Chicken with carrots, squash, broccoli and cauliflower
Apples, cucumbers, grapes, jicama
Protein shake with no carbs
Is it just me, or does Canelo Alvarez's diet look like something your mom would give you as a fifth-grader to make sure you didn't get chunky? Compare this to world-class Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps' diet and it's actually insane that Alvarez can compete at the level he does.
Anyway, with Canelo slated to go head-to-head with Gennady Golovkin this weekend in a highly-anticipated bout, let's hope he has enough energy to go ahead and actually get through the damn thing, because, for a professional athlete who's at the highest ranking in his sport, Alvarez's diet seems super sparse.
And, hey, if he doesn't fuel himself up with a bunch of food, maybe he should just carbo load by downing Tecate, since, you know, he appears in a bunch of the Mexican beer's commercials as the spokesperson.
Yeah, that's probably what he'll be doing, right?
