You know, there's not a whole lot that separates athletes from actors. Think about it — both make a boat load of money, both are adored by fans all over the world and both are required to alter their physique in the name of their careers. Today, we'll be discussing Christian Bale's weight loss for The Machinist as a prime example. We'd like to go ahead and warn y'all ahead of time that the clip is a bit, erm, disturbing. Sources suggest that Bale got down to a frightening 110 pounds for the film — needless to say, that isn't a pretty picture.
Of course, The Machinist came out in 2004, but recently Christian spoke with The Guardian opening up about that transformation. He explains:
"It’s an amazing experience doing that. When you’re so skinny that you can hardly walk up a flight of stairs … you’re, like, this being of pure thought. It’s like you’ve abandoned your body. That’s the most Zen-like state I’ve ever been in my life. Two hours sleep, reading a book for 10 hours straight without stopping … unbelievable. You couldn’t rile me up. No rollercoaster of emotions. Alas, it doesn’t last. As soon as you start putting the food back in your stomach, the rollercoaster comes back.”
Well, damn, Christian! Putting it like that almost makes it sound enticing. Then again, he was most likely suffering from starvation-induced mania. No matter how much jiggle you've got going on around the middle, this type of dieting is never OK. It's rumored that he lived off of "water, an apple and one cup of coffee per day, with the occasional whiskey." That's a fast trick to skinny alright, a skinny death!
