5 Important Tips For Getting Through Your 'Mid-Day Slump'

If you've never experienced the "mid-day slump" I have two questions for you. One, do you experience any other super natural powers as well? And two, why did you click on this article? To see how us mere mortals operate? Because truthfully, this phenomenon is pretty much the worst part of the day. I guess that's why they call it a slump, huh?

Anyway, for me, the slump is generally between 2 and 3 PM, for others it may come earlier or later, depending upon your working hours. It's really all relative to what your "mid-day" is on the clock.

I've come up with some fairly effective tips in alleviating the sluggishness that coincides with this slump. Some are obvious, some aren't. It's all about figuring out what works for you.

  1. Remember when I said some of these are obvious? Let's start there. When I'm feeling particularly lazy, I take the easy way out. By that I mean, I drink coffee, or really anything caffeinated. The trouble with taking the easy way out is that you make it harder on yourself later. In this instance, drinking caffeine later on in the day will generally make it more difficult to sleep at night, leaving you even more lethargic the next day at work. It's a vicious cycle.

  2. Listen to music. Nothing mellow! Turn off the Beethoven, dude. You need something loud, busy, frantic, maybe even alarming to keep your brain alert and eyes open. If you're one of these people who can't work and listen to music, that's fine. You can literally take a break to listen to upbeat music that will amp you up. Almost like you're about to start a workout. Try Eye of The Tiger if you want to be super cliche.

  3. There's a strong possibility that you may not even be tired, just hungry. Don't be one of those asshats who thinks not taking a lunch makes them a better employee. TAKE A LUNCH. You need sustenance to get through a day, it's really that simple. You don't need to be a dietician to put that together.

  4. Even if it's just a walk to the bathroom, sometimes it's good to stand up and shake out a little bit (sort of like a stiff blanket). If you're able to get outside for a few moments of fresh air, that'd be even better. If you happen to have an office that keeps you imprisoned, maybe just stick your head out the window.

  5. Now, I very rarely resort to this one, but desperate times call for desperate measures. During that aforementioned lunch hour that you SHOULD be taking, go ahead and take a little power-nap. A power-nap generally consists of snoozing between 10-20 minutes. Nothing crazy, just enough to feel a little boost of new energy. If you have bad experiences with napping, and you find that you usually end up sleeping for 3 hours when you only intend 20 minutes, please avoid this option. You're likely to be fired or accused of having a drug problem.
