It's funny, I really can't remember a time in my life when Bill Gates wasn't always synonymous with the richest man in the world. Even as a kid, it was standard knowledge that Mr. Gates was the founder of Microsoft and he was obscenely, stinking-rich—turns out, all that's about to change. Well, not entirely. Gates is still supremely, stupid-wealthy, but not the wealthiest.
According to Tech Crunch—
"Amazon stock hit an all-time high during intraday trading and with it CEO Jeff Bezos’ estimated wealth hit $90.9 billion, Bloomberg reports. This number pushes the net worth of the Amazon founder past that of Microsoft founder Bill Gates, still sitting pretty with $90.7 billion, earning Bezos the title of world’s richest person."
Oh, right! I forgot to tell ya'll who exactly Jeff Bezos is. I mean, my hope is that you would happen to have that basic knowledge, then again, ordering BBQ accessories off of Amazon and knowing who founded Amazon are two entirely different things.
Jeff Bezos, 53, is the founder, chairmen, and CEO of Amazon (which, as you know, is the world's largest shopping retailer). Given the recent success of Amazon, as mentioned above, it's no surprise that he took the title for richest person in the world. There's a catch though. According to NPR—
"For several hours, Bezos was the richest person on earth — surpassing Microsoft founder Bill Gates. The top billionaire title has previously been claimed by Mexican telecom titan Carlos Slim, Spanish fast-fashion giant Amancio Ortega and investor Warren Buffett — though most of the time, it's firmly in Gates' possession."
