Rosie Mac’s name may not ring any bells, but you’ve almost definitely spent a number of cosy evenings in with her already. Why? Because if you’re one of the millions of telly-box watchers who religiously tunes into Game Of Thrones (along with gazillions of wily downloading types), you’ll have seen her petting dragons, crushing cities and looking unbearably pretty as Daenerys Targaryen. And she’s got a selfie to thank for landing her the role of a lifetime.
The 18-year-old Newcastle-born beauty is the super-fit body double for the Mother of Dragons on, you know, only the biggest TV show in the world. And when Rosie isn’t busy helping Emilia Clarke look badass, she’s modelling, dancing in music videos for the likes of Mika and James Blunt, and running her own model agency. She’s also a former world street-dance champion, and was ranked fourth best breakdancer on the planet…
Rosie, although you live in Spain, we can still call you one of our own, right?
I was born in Newcastle and brought up in Cornwall until I was about 10, then I moved out here nine years ago. Now I eat Spanish food, watch TV in Spanish, read in Spanish – I even scream out Spanish words while I’m sleeping, so I must dream in Spanish! I feel more Spanish than I do English now, weirdly.
Oh. Oh no. But there must be something you miss about your motherland?
I do miss Cornish pasties. You can’t get a good pasty in Spain. Or fish and chips. They can never get it quite right.
Good. And, given your role as pale-faced Daenerys’ double, surely a suntan is the last thing you want?
Well, it was hard when we were filming. At one point we were shooting in the middle of a bullring. It was boiling hot, so I had to have an umbrella on me 24/7. It is hard, but I get told what I’m doing a month before.
In case we fancy trying our luck, how would we land a job on Game Of Thrones?
They did the casting out here, but I couldn’t go to it as I had a big modelling job on. But then I got a call from my agent to say he’d sent a selfie to the HBO directors. They asked me for my measurements and then just said, “Yep, we want you as the Daenerys double.”
I thought it was a prank call – I was like, “Shut up.”
Talk us through a day in the life of a double…
It’s a bit of everything, really. There’s quite a lot of waiting around. I hang out with all the other body doubles and we have a right laugh – we have beatboxing competitions.
Do people ever mistake you for the real Daenerys?
Yes! The director David Nutter grabbed my shoulder and said, “Come on Emilia, we have to go.” I was like, “Um, it’s me.”
You’re also a crazy talented dancer. What might we have seen you in?
I’ve just been in the video for the new Mr Probz and Armin van Buuren song, Another You. I was sitting with Armin and
I mentioned I was Daenerys’ body double. He started saying, ‘Hail the Queen! Hail the Queen!’
You’re a singer, too. What’s your musical style?
I’ve got a very low voice – not your typical girlie voice. I sound like Ed Sheeran. I do love to sing, but acting is my real goal.
Go on then: what would be your dream role?
Oh, I’m not sure. Maybe if they made another Harry Potter…
As Harry, yeah?
[Laughs] Harry’s body double! I don’t know, maybe I could be Hermione’s crazy sister.
It doesn’t sound like you have much of it, but how do you spend your free time?
I go horse riding, dance, go to the beach – I love swimming in the sea. I also sleep a lot! I love to watch really scary movies – oh, and I sometimes watch myself on TV, too.
