Love her or hate her, Mia Khalifa has dealt with more backlash in her 25 years than most people do in a lifetime. The fact that she still chooses to remain in the public eye is pretty freakin' brave, in our opinion. If nothing else, it's important to acknowledge that. Yeah, we're looking at you, Internet trolls.
Recently, Khalifa revealed in a very raw interview with Lance Armstrong, on his podcast The Forward, the true reason why she quit the adult film industry. At one point in her career, Khalifa was voted Pornhub's most-watched actress. Considering how many actresses are in the adult film business, that's not an easy title to snag. Regardless, her decision to leave was imminent. Some would even suggest that it was life or death. Khalifa explains: "It all started to spiral out of control when the death threats from ISIS started coming in. That's when I stepped away."
For those wondering why ISIS would concern themselves with Khalifa, many attribute the threats to her videos where she wears a hijab. Islamic extremists didn't take kindly to that and the threats started rolling in, first on social media — where else?
Last year, Khalifa detailed to The Sports Junkies, "They photoshopped a picture of me being beheaded and threatened that that would happen to me." Initially, Mia tried to deal with the threats, suggesting that "you can't show weakness". However, she later explained that, "it gets to you after awhile."
While Lance Armstrong and Mia Khalifa don't appear to have a lot in common, they managed to connect over some of the more questionable decisions they've made in life; Lance with his use of performance enhancing drugs and Mia with her brief, albeit impactful, porn career.
Mia reveals to Armstrong that shortly after her breast enlargement surgery, she was approached to do porn, "I thought about it for two weeks and made the mistake of saying yes and going in." Looking back, it's clear that she hardly believes two weeks was enough time to make such a life-altering decision, "As soon as I started to gain popularity, that’s when I was like, ‘Get the f-ck out of this’ … this was not what I was trying to do whatsoever."
It's clear from her responses that Khalifa has had time to reflect and move on from her past in the adult film industry. We all do impulsive things in life, Mia Khalifa's just happened to be more public than most. She has since gone on to infiltrate the sports world which, unfortunately, is not always easy for women to do. Either way Khalifa has and will continue to prevail in the face of her haters.
