Spring training is here and all MLB teams (and their fans) can do is hope for a World Series title by the time the season ends. While everyone has wishful thinking this time of year, only one franchise will be crowned champion when all is said and done, meaning we've got six months of a grind to see who separates themselves as the favorite.
During that season, though, plenty of MLB teams will see their fans show up to the ballpark in merchandise to support the players on the field, while dropping some serious dough on crazy food and beverages while at the stadium. Let's face it, we all know food prices and such can get a bit excessive while watching a live sporting event, but have you ever stopped to wonder just how much you're really dropping each time you're taking in a game with your buddies?
Lucky for you, we have the answer. Thanks to the good folks over at ** PlayNJ** — who crunched the numbers to find out which MLB teams have the most expensive merchandise, food prices, parking and other stuff, we can determind just how much it truly costs to root, root, root for the home team. Here's what the data showed.
According to the data from PlayNJ, overall, the average cost of being a baseball fan is $7,911. But here's a closer look at the analysis from PlayNJ about the top-3 most expensive MLB teams out there. Well, for fans' bank accounts, that is.
1. Chicago Cubs: $15,7 22.77. A successful team clearly comes at a price, at over $150 per ticket supporting. The Chicago Cubs take first place as the most expensive team to be a fan of.
2. Boston Red Sox: $12,712.28. The team that is home to the unlucky red seat of Fenway Park comes in second they also sell one of the most expensive baseball cap’s going for $25.
3. New York Yankees: $12,547.04. Unsurprisingly the team with 27 World Series wins also ranks in the top 3. The Yankees take third place as the most expensive team to be a fan of.
To help land on the estimate for all 29 MLB teams, PlayNJ assumed 81 (home) games for each franchise, which included one ticket, parking, one beer, one soft drink and one hot dog. Additionally, the costs of a cap and a custom jersey were added, just because sports fans can get fancy.
Not long ago, we released the costs of stadium food for each NFL team. While some of those prices were just ridiculous — with the average NFL fan spending about $98.00 for a nosebleed seat, a 12-oz. drink and one hot dog — MLB teams aren't charging much less.
