As per the Focus Features YouTube description:
"The Beguiled is an atmospheric thriller from acclaimed writer/director Sofia Coppola. The story unfolds during the Civil War, at a Southern girls’ boarding school. Its sheltered young women take in an injured enemy soldier. As they provide refuge and tend to his wounds, the house is taken over with sexual tension and dangerous rivalries, and taboos are broken in an unexpected turn of events."
All things considered, the summary doesn't nearly capture the downright chilling nature of the trailer. Between Nicole Kidman, Elle Fanning, and Kirsten Dunst the role of the melancholic, and possibly psychopathic (scratch that, definitely psychopathic) female is covered in spades. Personally, I'm most excited to see Dunst perform, despite Kidman's larger and seemingly more terrifying role in the film.
I've always found Kirsten to be a remarkable actress who regardless of her obvious beauty, can be really really creepy. Between Melancholia, The Virgin Suicides and Sofia Coppola's own, Marie Antoinette, I have zero doubts she'll be the doe-eyed-temptress turned monster I've grown to know and love.
Of course, Collin Farrell too is another Hollywood A-lister in the picture, but I was mostly trying to focus on the predominantly female cast, well, because it's quite refreshing, especially in a film of this genre. It's pretty commonplace for movies taking place in The Civil War to focus on the strife of the American male soldier and while that's definitely sprinkled in The Beguiled it's not the central focal point.
The Beguiled will premiere on Friday, June 23, 2017, so mark your calendars and get ready to kick off a Summer of killer movies.
