People have been popping pimples, removing blackheads and extracting pesky cysts for years — this is nothing new! Somewhere along the line however, these previously private and ultimately grotesque beauty routines hit the main stream with Instagram accounts like Dr. Pimple Popper and YouTube videos such as the one below.
It wouldn't be weird to find them completely disgusting. I mean, a blackhead is a pore clogged with dirty, oil, and dead skin cells (among other gross sht). Who wants to see that being ripped out of someone's body? Well, lot's of people — *actually. The question is, why?! Well, it has something to do with ASMR. For those of you who can't remember your basic Psychology 101 courses you were forced to take back in college. Don't worry, I've got you covered —
"ASMR signifies the subjective experience of "low-grade euphoria" characterized by "a combination of positive feelings and a distinct static-like tingling sensation on the skin". It is most commonly triggered by specific acoustic, visual and digital media stimuli, and less commonly by intentional attentional control."
In layman's terms, pimple popping videos for a lot of people can be filed under the category of specific visual stimuli. It's satisfying to see the process from start to finish with a full extraction. Similarly to how a lot of folks enjoy a cake being watched in clean, uniform slices or those weird Instagram videos of polymer sand being sliced. Make sense? If not, feel free to go read up on it some more with this Idiot's Guide. It's highly-effective in tempering anxiety.
See what I'm saying? Gross? For sure! Oddly satisfying? Most definitely. If you completely disagree with the latter and only the former, then yeah, maybe stop clicking on things regarding pimple extraction, ya weirdo.
