I think myths, no matter how misleading, can actually be really helpful to the human psyche. It's like when you believe in Santa Claus as a kid, or convincing yourself that half of the women in Hollywood don't in fact have fake asses — what do you mean women can't really look like that?! F-ck outta here with that!
I guess at some point or another though, you have to let go of youthful naiveté and face facts. So, I'm sorry to do this to you, boys, but the jig is up!
This particular bout of myth busting is especially heinous (dun, dun) because it deals with every man's favorite past time — oral sex—giving it and getting it.
According to the Daily Star there are three central misconceptions about oral sex that must be put to rest (I almost said "to bed" but, too soon).
You Can't Get An STI/STD From Oral Sex
The NHS (National Health Service) recommends everyone use a condom when performing oral sex, to prevent disease from spreading — "Dental dams and condoms can be used as barrier methods to prevent the passing on of STIs during oral sex, and are available free via your local family planning clinic or sexual health service,” Sue Knight, lead nurse of Clinical Governance at young people's sexual health and wellbeing charity Brook told The Independent.
Swallowing Semen Is Harmful
"Semen mostly contains some sugars and proteins, contents that don’t cause harm by themselves. It also contains vitamin B12, vitamin C, zinc and calcium and some mood-boosting compounds such as cortisol, estrone, oxytocin and serotonin."
Pineapple Makes Your 'Spunk' Sweet
"Your diet does affect your bodily secretions, but eating pineapple is not guaranteed to make your nether regions smell sweet. In fact there is no scientific research that proves certain foods make semen or vaginal fluids taste sweeter, according to psychologist Debby Herbenick."
Alright, so if you believe any or all of these to be true, you might be a little disappointed. Well, maybe not so much by the second one, but most definitely 1 and 2. Frankly, I don't know how anyone was unaware that you can get an STD from head, but I digress.
Now go have loads of safe and informed sex!
