Soundgarden singer and Audioslave frontman Chris Cornell tragically died at the age of 52 back in May. It was a loss that shook the music world, with Cornell's voice always one that could be identified, along with having some of the biggest hits of the '90s.
At the time of his death, a representative from The Detroit Police Department told Variety that, while it's too soon to make a definitive decision on the cause of death, the matter is being investigated as a suicide:
"At 12 a.m. [local time], we received a 911 call from the MGM Grand Casino Hotel,' Detroit Police director of media relations told Variety. 'It appears as though a family friend was checking up on Cornell at his wife’s request. He went to hotel and discovered him unresponsive on the bathroom floor. Police made the location with EMS, and he was pronounced dead at the scene."
The Detroit Police rep continued, saying, "At present, our investigation is leaning toward the possibility of suicide, but we must wait for a medical report to determine the cause of death. At this time we cannot release too much information about what we observed in Cornell’s hotel room or what led us to this conclusion."
Chris Cornell's passing came as a devastating loss and huge shock to his fans and the Rock community at large. Cornell performed just a night prior with his band Soundgarden, where audiences report edthat he was as passionate and full of life as ever. While it's incredibly tragic, it is somewhat comforting to know that he spent his last hours doing what he loved most — although, clearly, he had some demons that were buried deep inside of him.
Chris Cornell's representative released a statement following his death, saying this:
“Chris Cornell passed away late Wednesday night in Detroit, MI. His wife Vicky and family were shocked to learn of his sudden and unexpected passing, and they will be working closely with the medical examiner to determine the cause. They would like to thank his fans for their continuous love and loyalty and ask that their privacy be respected at this time.”
In addition to the tremendous loss of Cornell, the rock community also lost Linkin Park lead singer Chester Bennington not long ago, too, with a final letter from his band mates to the fallen singer being one that brings a heavy heart.
From Chris Cornell to Chester Bennington, let's hope those struggling with depression or dealing with suicidal thoughts can and will ask for help.
