With multiple sources already confirming that Stranger Things season 3 won't be returning until 2019, we thought it best to put our excitement on the back burner and woefully binge-watch the existing two season (repeatedly) in the meantime. But, after a particularly forthcoming interview, both executive producer Shawn Levy and the Duffer Brothers have revealed that the third installation of the series is a lot further along that people think. So much so, that there's a possibility, albeit small, that we'll be watching the show by the end of this year!
Of course, this is all wishful thinking. That being said, we'll let you guys read a bit of the interview below and gauge for yourselves. We're airing on the side of optimism and we're hoping you are too! Executive producer Shawn Levy candidly explained to Glamour a number of things from the release date to what the potential plot points are going to be:
"If we could make it [return] faster, then we would. But we're going to make it well. We're going to do it right. We're there, it'll be an eight- or nine-episode season. The number of episodes will be dictated by the amount of story that excites us. We now know what is going to happen in season three to every character."
OK, so, that's huge! See, unlike Game of Thrones, people were under the impression that the writing of Stranger Things 3 hadn't even started yet. For example, the final season of GoT has been completed/written, it's the execution/ shooting that's preventing audiences from seeing it until 2019. This isn't to say that Stranger Things doesn't have crazy production value, but now that we know the story is complete, we can only hope that shooting will start soon! As for the plot, Levy continued:
"We're going to give Will a break. We’re not going to put Will through hell for a third season in a row. He’ll be dealing with stuff, but he won’t be at rock bottom the way we forced the amazing Noah Schnapp to play."
Well, that's a relief, huh? Will has taken a (literal) beating over these past two season! We'd hate to see that storyline become overplayed, so, we're glad the Duffer Brothers are pulling back on that. That still leaves the rest of the gang, though! What's in store for fan favorites like Eleven, Hopper, Steve, and Dustin? Levy confirmed:
"You'll definitely get some Steve/Dustin action. In season two, it was all very cute and there was a funny factor to it because it was unexpected, but now that it is expected, I want to see them connect more and be more familiar with each other. I want them to have a connection like they’ve really had a connection for a year — like they’re brothers."
The one thing Levy wouldn't reveal is the return of Dr. Owens — "I don't have a clear-cut answer for you yet", he said. We're going to go ahead and call his bluff! He knows, he just doesn't want to give too much away. After all, he already admitted the story is complete! He surely knows if the return of the evil Poppa is happening. Of course, stay tuned! We'll keep you posted with any and all Stranger Things 3 updates as they roll in from the upside down!
