There's no question that the Uber app undoubtedly enhances the quality of most people's lives. From allowing users to comfortably avoid public transportation to lessening the dangers in drunk driving, Uber is a God-send. Er, well, it used to be. Unfortunately the latest Uber news is prettying damning to their gleaming reputation and it's safe to say that a lot of users, especially those with iPhones, are going to be pissed.

This isn't the first time an app has grossly over-stepped privacy boundaries and we hardly think it will be the last, but that doesn't make it any less jarring. According to The Independent:

"Uber could record everything on your iPhone’s screen, even when the app is running in the background, security researchers have discovered."

"The software has been found to have a special permission, which is off-limits to most app developers, that allows it to monitor everything iPhone users look at on their handsets, including passwords and private pictures."

Do we believe this could be useful in a dangerous situation? Absolutely. Should the uber driver or passenger be in a compromising position, the recording/monitoring capabilities could be beneficial. Problem is, we don't think that's what Uber's intention was and researchers agree:

"Uber says the feature is not in use and will be removed, but the fact it theoretically could have allowed the company to spy on customers' sensitive personal data is extremely worrying."

It's important to be as informed as possible before downloading anything to your phone. You never know when something is crawling with malware or worse, invading your privacy and hijacking all of your important personal and financial information.
