It's the time of year where, more often than not, people everywhere are relying on alcohol to get them through the dysfunctional holiday time with family and friends. And while we're in full support of that decision—as long as it's done responsibly—there are a few things you need to know in order to do it right.
No, we're not talking about drink recipes to try out, but rather what drinks you should be sipping on to avoid a massive hangover.
Since no drink is created equal—all you regular boozers out there know that—here are the alcohols that will leave you feeling like a runaway semi truck just got loose and nailed you right in the head, per Mirror.
Some types of alcohol are likely to give you much worse a hangover than others - with red wine, whiskey and brandy among the worst offenders.
While all alcoholic drinks contain the chemical ethanol, which the liver and brain will always break down the same way, the cause of a hangover is due in part to the extra ingredients.
These include sugar and other preservatives, which leave you in pain the morning after.
So, according to that, if you're one to have an "easy" night by sipping red wine, you may want to rethink your strategy, because, chances are, you'll be left feeling rough the next morning.
The Mirror piece continues to explain things, speaking with Yoko Inoue, who studied holistic nutrition and founded the superfood cafe Shokuiku.
"When we digest alcohol, the body has to convert it to acetaldehyde. Acetaldehyde can be a burden in the system and cause unpleasant symptoms."
"Vodka has the least 'hangover causing' toxins, particularly congeners, compared to other dark liquors like scotch and whisky."
"So when selecting a drink, choose cleaner options and space out drinks with extra glasses of water."
There's your go-to alcohol, guys: vodka.
Lastly, the Mirror piece says that carbonated drinks such as champagne, cava or prosecco should be avoided to keep the hangover bug away, too, stating that "around two-thirds of people will get drunker quicker" by sipping those options.
And, because you're probably wondering, here are the foods that Inoue says can actually help fight your hangover—although, honestly, none sound particularly tasty after a night of heavy drinking.
"Foods like broccoli, kale, lemon, turmeric and beetroot are great for your liver.
"Also, herbs such as milk thistle, dandelion, Chanca piedra, burdock and schisandra berries should be included in your diet to assist with the liver function."
There you have it, guys, before you know it, you'll be fighting your hangover with crazy kale smoothies.
